Big Idea: SA's cultural district

The Broadway Reach is more than an idea, with seven cultural partners, from the San Antonio Museum of Art up to the McNay, a sweet logo, and a small pot of money from the Department of Culture and Creative Development for design and marketing. The name was inspired by the Museum Reach, the stretch of the extended River Walk that runs alongside the Southwest School of Art, SAMA and the Witte. With the McNay in its club, the Broadway Reach is more geographically ambitious, but most of the partners are in and near the park: the Zoo, the Witte, the future Children’s Museum, the Botanical Garden, and Brackenridge Park itself.

SAMA Director Katie Luber – who's recently been forced to spend time rebutting the sort of inane prudery one generally associates with older politicians from e.g. Missouri – has an even grander notion: transforming the area in and around SAMA's 14-acre site into a complete cultural destination, like Houston's Museum District, home to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Contemporary Arts Museum, the Glassell School, the zoo, and several other attractions within walking distance. Or like Fort Worth’s Cultural District, which includes the Fort Worth Modern, the Kimbell and the Amon Carter, all a short amble from one another.
