Artpace Executive Director Matthew Drutt is leaving Artpace following a meeting of the board of directors in New York this weekend. Drutt's current contract runs through September, but the change is effective immediately. Drutt declined to comment this morning.
Brought in by the late Linda Pace and the board after a three-month search in 2006, Drutt has proven a brilliant curator — particularly of the Hudson (Show)Room gallery, and has presided over the rise of public events such as Chalk It Up. Critics, however, have questioned Drutt's role as an administrator, fundraiser, and people manager, and his overall fit at the 16-year-old institution.
