Rosen's Magik history

On May 21, 2008, director Richard Rosen was about to make a difficult decision. It was opening night of Shakespeare in the Park at the San Antonio Botanical Garden – The Tempest. Heavy storms were predicted by 11 p.m., but it seemed a safe bet to open the 8 p.m. show. As Rosen and his staff watched the radar and the fearless actors onstage, angry winds blew and the rain came down in buckets, causing more than half the audience to sweep up their lawn chairs and blankets and run for shelter. But even though lightning crackled through the sky, Rosen couldn't bring himself to call off the show. Finally, his technical director jumped onstage and did the honors for him.

"It was hard," recalls Rosen, 63, with a slight shake of the head. "It was the first time that I had to cancel a show."
