A holy war in the Cellar

Last Saturday night, two very different religious ceremonies took place at the San Pedro Cellar Theater during the second performance of Terrence McNally’s passion play, Corpus Christi. While the actors rose to dramatic heights inside the tiny theater, religious protestors swarmed outside, irritably chanting and waving signs denouncing the production, turning the often peaceful San Pedro Park into a matchless battle ground of pop culture.

Mounted in cities around the world, this provocative production challenges spectators to imagine the life of a messianic figure walking the earth today – as a self-doubting, self-conscious gay man. The play is set in modern-day Corpus Christi, Texas, and tells the story of Joshua (Jonathan Itchon) and his 12 Banana Republic-clad gay apostles.
