As rumors bounced around Council District 1 late Tuesday, the hard work ahead for retired firefighter Ralph Medina became clear. If he’s to have any hope of overtaking Diego Bernal in next month’s runoff, he'll have to raise a significant amount of money quickly and begin attacking the civil rights attorney immediately. He can’t say a nice or even neutral word about Bernal until the polls close June 11.
Several sources, speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to publicly discuss the contest, said a faction of Medina’s backers are blanching; they want him to avoid a costly blood bath and cede the race to Bernal, though they haven’t pressed him hard to do so.
