To help pay for your child's education, schools in Bexar County eagerly grabbed more than $250 million handed out as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Almost all of the districts spent every penny of the stimulus funds.
But the San Antonio Independent School District recently had to return $565,000 because it didn’t spend the money before the September 30, 2011, deadline.
“I'm angry, I'm disgusted. It just should not have happened. Because look at the situation the district is in right now,” said Alejandrina Garcia, whose grandchildren attend SAISD schools.
The unspent money includes $234,000 for equipment like computers and white boards for the Bexar County Juvenile Center. The district says it had limited space and ordered as much as it could fit in the facility.
