Courage announces run for Wentworth's seat

Local teacher and longtime Democratic Party activist John Courage announced Wednesday morning that he'll file to run for the Texas Senate in District 25, a seat currently held by Jeff Wentworth. Courage and his wife Zada have been active for years in the Bexar County Democratic Party and over the last decade he has twice (2002 and 2006) challenged Republican Congressman Lamar Smith, garnering no better than 25 percent of the vote in either of his two general-election campaigns.

Courage has generally been motivated by a desire to ensure that conservative Republican officials don't go unopposed, and late last year he briefly considered making a third run for Smith's seat, before quietly declining. He almost certainly will be the only Democrat in the District 25 primary. Wentworth, a San Antonio Republican, is embroiled in a bitter primary race against former Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Ames Jones and Tea Party favorite Donna Campbell.
